چکیده
Background Host modulation is fast gaining popularity as one of the most safe and effective therapeutic modalities in a number of systemic ailments and also periodontal disease. Of these, herbal agents and probiotics have emerged as popular therapeutic agents. The present study was attempted to comparatively evaluate for the first time the effects of both these agents on chronic periodontitis. Materials and methods In this double blinded randomized controlled clinical trial, 96 systemically healthy patients with chronic periodontitis between the ages of 25-55 years were randomly divided into 3 groups. Following scaling and root planing, group 1 was administered the herbal immunomodulator tablets twice daily for 2 weeks, group 2, probiotic tablets twice daily for 2 weeks and group 3 was not administered any agent. Changes in gingival index, gingival bleeding index, pocket depth and interleukin – 6 (IL-6) levels in saliva and GCF were assessed at day 0, at 1 month, at 3 months and 6 months following which statistical analysis was done. Results Statistically significant reduction (p<0.001) in clinical parameters and GCF IL-6 levels at 1, 3 and 6 months respectively within all 3 groups was observed. However, there was a significant reduction in salivary IL-6 levels within group 3 only. Group 1 showed better clinical results and salivary IL-6 reduction compared to group 2 and 3. Conclusion Both herbal and probiotic immunomodulators were effective when used as adjuncts to scaling and root planing in chronic periodontitis patients.

Effects of Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy on Gingival Crevicular Fluid Levels of Interleukin-17 and Interleukin-23 in Patients with Periodontitis: A Clinical Trial
Background and Aim: Considering the critical role of inflammatory responses in periodontal disease, knowledge about the immune system and cytokines seems nec-essary. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of IL-23 and IL-17 in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of patients with chronic and aggressive periodontitis, before and after non-surgical periodontal therapy. Materials and Methods:...

Introduction: Cytokines are the important factors in the progression of periodontal diseases. The aim of this study was to find out the effect of the first phase of the periodontal therapy on the amount of existing IL-17 and IL-23 in gingival crevicular fluid in patients with severe periodontitis and in the control group. Methods: In this clinical trial intervention study, after purifying the...
متن کاملComparing Gingival Crevicular Fluid Visfatin Levels Between Patients with Endometrial Cancer and Chronic Periodontitis and Healthy Controls
Background and purpose: The association between periodontal diseases and endometrial cancer (EC) has been assessed in some studies but the probable role of inflammatory factors such as visfatin is unknown. This study aimed at evaluating the levels of visfatin in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in patients with EC and chronic periodontitis (CP) to address this gap. Materials and methods: In a ...

Background: Cytokines are suggested to play a role in periodontitis. Objective: To determine and compare the levels of Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples amongst healthy individuals and those with chronic periodontitis. Further to compare the GCF cytokine levels in three genotype classes defined by the respective gene p...
